Richard Alles

Director of 9/11 Community Affairs

888.351.9421 phone

On August 31st, I concluded my third and final term as the Legislative Director and Financial Secretary of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA) L-854, AFL-CIO. It was indeed an honor and a privilege to work on behalf of the thousands of members of my union, as well as our fellow partners in organized labor. I am also retiring from the New York City Fire Department after a 38 year career.

On September 12, 2016, I joined the law firm of Barasch McGarry Salzman & Penson as their new Director of 9/11 Community Affairs. No other law firm in the country has recovered more money from the Sept 11th Victim Compensation Fund on behalf of its injured and deceased clients than Barasch & McGarry. I’m very pleased to be able to assist this law firm and I am delighted that I can continue advocating for the thousands of first responders, union workers, volunteers, and survivors who are now sick as a result of their exposure to the toxic dust at Ground Zero.

In 2011 the James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act became law and created the WTC Health Program to provide free medical, monitoring, and treatment, as well as the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund to provide compensation for those suffering due to exposure from 9/11 toxins. The law was reauthorized in December 2015 to extend the health benefits through 2090, and to extend the compensation deadline to December 2020 while adding an additional $4.6 billion dollars in benefits.

No doubt you have heard the frightening news that the WTC Health Program has reported a three-fold increase in 9/11-linked cancers during the past 3 years!

It appears that I will be very busy helping to educate both active and retired members throughout the country about the deadlines that they face in order to preserve their rights.

Please don’t hesitate to call me if there is anything that I can personally do for you. It would be my pleasure to put the full resources of the law firm behind you.

As part of my outreach to the 9/11 community I have held meetings with various labor unions explaining the intricacies of the legislation and the legal rights of the members represented by these unions who participated in the recovery and cleanup of Ground Zero during the period of Sept 11, 2001 to May 30, 2002.

I have also been guest speaker at various FDNY and NYPD retiree group meetings as well as at fraternal meetings of these same departments.

I plan to continue outreach and also work in the office fielding calls from the general public about the legislation as well as from those who worked at the Ground Zero site and have now been diagnosed with any of the 68 covered cancers or the various respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses that are covered by the law.
