September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Issues July 2022 Report

August 1, 2022 | Michael Barasch

The July 2022 Report from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) reveals that the fund has continued to receive new claims at a rate similar to recent months. The number award determinations reached was lower than normal.

A few notable items from the report include:

  • Claims submitted prior to June 2021 are currently receiving award decisions.
  • Claims submitted prior to July 2021 are currently in substantive review.
  • Claims submitted in August 2021 – January 2022 will come under substantive review soon.
  • Claims submitted prior to February 2022 are in preliminary review.

There were 1,072 new registrations in July 2022, slightly fewer than in June. The total number of registrations amounts to 144,780. 595 new personal injury claims and 72 deceased claims were submitted to the VCF in July.

Since the fund opened, 76,345 claims have been submitted. Of the claims submitted in July, 406 were from survivors and 257 were from responders (4 were not categorized). Overall, responders have submitted more claims, 42,202, than survivors, 33,290.

Barasch & McGarry is proud that we have submitted approximately 1/3 of all Personal Injury claims and over 40% of all Wrongful Death claims. Only 59 Initial Compensation Determinations and 25 Amended Compensation Determinations were reached in July, much lower than the figures (675 initial and 196 amended) in June.

I worked for Worldcom on the 17th floor of 22 Whitehall St, about 10 blocks away.
I made it down and to home that day, but we are back in the office two weeks later. Did a lot of walking around downtown. Never occurred to me that the sleep apnea I have for years could have been the result of breathing that air.
