The Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) will Permanently Close Exactly 3 Years from Today

Today marks three years from the date that the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) will shut its doors forever. While the WTC Health Program (WTCHP) was extended for 75 years, the 9/11 Community will no longer be able to assert claims for compensation for new illnesses or wrongful death after December 18, 2020. Despite the fact that the VCF has awarded over $3 billion to 14,000+ responders, downtown residents, office workers, teachers and students, the reality is that only a fraction of those eligible have registered with the WTCHP and moved forward with a VCF claim. Click this link for more info.

Please help us spread the word to your friends and former colleagues who are unaware of the fact that doctors have linked many gastrointestinal and respiratory illnesses, as well as 68 cancers, to the WTC toxins. The most common cancers are skin cancers, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer. So far, more than 6,000 people have been certified with cancer and well over 1,000 have had their deaths linked to their toxic exposure.

More and more people in the 9/11 community continue to pay the price for the Environmental Protection Agency’s misguided reassurances, just days after the attacks, that the “air was safe”. A “cancer cluster” is how some doctors are describing the devastating revelation that students who attended schools south of Canal Street during the 2001-02 school year, are falling ill with WTC-related cancers. This should not come as a surprise. After all, students were exposed to the same toxins as NYPD Det. James Zadroga and every other responder, resident and office worker!

Once a person is certified by the WTCHP, he or she has just 2 years to register with the VCF. It is heartbreaking to hear from people who miss the deadline. Some people are reluctant to make a claim to the VCF in fear that they may develop a more serious illness in the future. I assure you that you do not waive your future legal rights by making a claim. The VCF has ample funds to compensate all victims, but victims must make timely claims.

Please encourage your neighbors and friends to enroll in the WTCHP or contact us and we will be happy to register them. The WTCHP provides free health care and prescription drug coverage to anyone certified with a WTC illness. Early detection can save your life.

Thank you for helping us get the word out to the 9/11 community.

Respectfully,

Michael Barasch

  • Deadline Extended to Register for Compensation

There is still time to apply for significant compensation if you have been diagnosed with any of the 68 cancers that doctors at the WTC Health Program (WTCHP) have linked to the WTC toxic dust. The deadline to apply to the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) is two years from the date that a cancer has been certified by the WTC Health Program — or any other governmental agency. The two-year period to register doesn’t start on the day of a cancer diagnosis. Rather, it starts only when a cancer survivor is made aware their cancer was linked to exposure to the WTC toxins.

For those who died from their WTC-linked cancers, the two-year period for their family to register starts on the day of the death of the WTC victim.
