What is the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund?

May 9, 2024 | Michael Barasch

Created by the Zadroga Act in 2011, the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund provides tax-free awards for pain and suffering, lost earnings, and benefits for surviving spouses and family members of responders and survivors who are diagnosed with 9/11-related cancer and respiratory illness.

If you were there in Lower Manhattan below Canal Street, at the Pentagon, or near the Flight 93 crash site in Shanksville, on September 11, 2001 or in the weeks and months that followed, you were exposed to toxic chemicals that increase your risk of 69 different types of cancer and many respiratory illnesses.

The most common cancers include skin cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, leukemia, lung cancer, kidney cancer, colon cancer, and bladder cancer.

Among the covered respiratory illnesses are asthma, GERD, chronic rhinosinusitis, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, sleep apnea, and chronic respiratory disorder.

Barasch & McGarry has recovered more than $3 billion in compensation awards for 9/11 responders, survivors, and their families from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund

If you were present on or after 9/11 in Lower Manhattan below Canal Street, at the Pentagon, or near the Flight 93 crash site in Shanksville, you are eligible to register with victim fund – even if you are currently healthy.

Registering now protects your right to file a claim in the future.

To file a claim with the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, you must enroll in the World Trade Center Health Program, which provides comprehensive medical monitoring and treatment to 9/11 responders and survivors for covered 9/11-related injuries and illnesses.

Certifying a 9/11-related cancer or respiratory illness with the health program allows you to file a claim for compensation with the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

Members enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program also have access to treatment nationwide for 9/11-related health conditions. For list of medical centers where you could access treatment, visit https://www.cdc.gov/wtc/clinics.html.

Barasch & McGarry represents nearly 40,000 members of the 9/11 community who have enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program or registered with the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.
